Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte and Presidential candidate said he will restore the death penalty and make it in public.
“I will work for the restoration of the death penalty. I will really bring it back, and make it in public, so that the people will see for themselves [how criminals are punished],” Philippine Daily Inquirer quoted him as saying.
The Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte first expressed his support for the restoration of the death penalty before the campaign period in Davao City.
He also asked the voters to just give him 3-6 months to end the criminality in the country.
He added that he would take “full responsibility” for any human rights or administrative charges against lawmen who would be accused of killing criminals.
“Kapag nagkapahirapan at gisahin ng Congress, ng Ombudsman, ang human rights ang mga pulis, there is a provision in the Constitution that the president can pardon the criminal whether conditional or full,” Duterte said.
“And if the Ombudsman and Human Rights Commission question them, I will tell them to just point their fingers at me,” he added.
